Fix the datum before measuring special panels
Use one coordinate and level system for the enclosure. Record the finished surface and the agreed location of posts relative to playing lines and run-offs. A diagonal tape measurement is a useful cross-check, but it does not replace a setting-out plan with known endpoints.
For a rectangular example 30 m by 18 m, the theoretical corner-to-corner diagonal is √(30² + 18²) = 34.986 m, approximately 34.99 m. Both diagonals should be compared against the drawing under the project's measurement method and tolerances.
Equal diagonals alone do not prove every required dimension is correct. A differently sized rectangle can also have equal diagonals. Check side lengths, positions and levels as well as squareness, and do not derive an acceptance tolerance from this arithmetic example.
Identify what happens at a corner post
Two fence runs may share a corner support or terminate at separate posts. Their connections need to fit without bolt clashes, inaccessible fasteners or unintended projections towards users. A corner post can receive loads from more than one direction, so it should not automatically be treated as an ordinary line post.
Show the infill face on each run. For rebound fencing, the intended ball-contact surface should continue through the corner detail. For netting, define support, termination and access separately; a flexible line does not connect like a rigid panel.
| Special position | Detail to issue |
|---|---|
| Right-angle corner | Post identity, two connection faces and accessible edges |
| Non-square corner | Actual included angle and panel end geometry |
| Gate junction | Fixed panel connection and clear gate movement |
| Height change | Top profile, post heights and lower-edge condition |
| Divider intersection | Each system's support, access and operating envelope |
Calculate a transition without treating it as a stock panel
Assume an illustrative fence top rises from 1.2 m to 3.0 m over a horizontal distance of 5.0 m. The rise is 1.8 m, giving a gradient of 1.8 ÷ 5.0 = 0.36, or 36%. The inclination is arctan(0.36), approximately 19.8 degrees.
Those values describe the top line only. They do not establish that a standard panel can be raked or cut to that shape. The approved transition needs its panel construction, edge finish, fixing positions and supports specified.
A stepped top line produces a different geometry from a sloping one. Choose the arrangement for the actual use and visual or safety requirements, then draw it explicitly. Avoid a sketch whose diagonal line is interpreted as a sloping ground level by one party and a sloping panel top by another.
Keep internal dividers independent where necessary
An internal divider may separate simultaneous activities, control ball movement or temporarily divide a court. Its design should identify whether it is fixed, movable or retractable and who operates it. Support reactions and storage positions need coordination with the outer enclosure.
Do not assume an external fence post can accept a new divider load because there is a spare fixing point. Nor should a divider reduce required run-offs or circulation routes when deployed. Show both working and stored positions on the facility layout.
Where users can encounter the divider, review lower gaps, loose material, projections and openings as part of the relevant safety assessment. The intended sports and user groups determine the necessary design inputs.
Order special parts by drawing reference
Use a schedule that distinguishes standard panels, closing panels, corners, transitions and divider components. Give each special part a unique reference, dimensions and orientation. A single line reading “special panels: six” cannot tell the receiving team where the parts belong.
Before production, compare the special-part list with the overall enclosure drawing and the gate schedule. After delivery, retain labels until installation locations have been verified. This is particularly useful for visually similar panels with different top profiles or connection sides.
The sports selection guide establishes the functional zones; this detail review connects them into a buildable layout. The last check is that every transition preserves the intended boundary, playing space and maintenance access in the installed arrangement.
