Which welded mesh fence panel should you specify?

Welded mesh fencing joins crossing steel wires into a rigid panel. The choice within this family concerns how that panel is built: paired horizontal wires, a formed profile or a flat grid. Begin with the required construction and the post system. A shared overall height does not make two panels equivalent.

For a fixed grid, increasing wire diameter increases the steel used and changes the connection envelope. It does not independently establish the strength of the complete fence. New fence runs and replacement panels need different information

For a new installation, divide the layout into straight runs, corners, changes in level, gates and short end bays. This gives the manufacturing schedule a regular panel quantity and a separate list of special widths. Dimension each special bay before applying the finish, so cutting and coating work can be included in the order.

For replacement supply, the retained posts set the interface. Record post spacing, available fixing positions, clamp dimensions and the finished panel edge. Photographs help identify the arrangement, while a dimensioned sketch or sample establishes the actual fit. A panel described only as 2D or 3D leaves those interfaces unresolved.

Reference dimensions for a quotation brief

Specify the steel and coating as part of the panel

For steel mesh, the enquiry should distinguish the wire specification from the protective finish. A coating on the wire before welding and a coating applied to the completed assembly have different process sequences. State the intended route so weld areas, cut edges and subsequent fabrication receive the agreed treatment.

A powder-coated finish adds a colour requirement alongside the base protection and surface preparation. Supply a colour code or approved sample, and identify whether panels, posts and gates must share the same appearance. Ask for the relevant coating evidence in the order specification rather than judging performance from a colour photograph.

Order panels, posts and gates as an identifiable package

A panel-only price and a complete-bay price cover different components. The quotation should show panels, line and end posts, corner arrangements, caps, clips, fasteners and any base plates separately. This makes a later change in fence length easier to price and reduces missing parts at installation.

Matching gates need their own opening width, leaf arrangement, frame and hardware specification. Use the gate collection for those choices. For close-spaced 358 panels use security mesh; for a court enclosure or rebound zone use sports fencing. Each has a different assembly brief.

What changes the cost of a custom welded mesh order?

Wire quantity, finished panel area, forming work, coating and the supporting components all affect the quotation. A comparison based only on price per panel can hide a smaller panel, a different wire arrangement or excluded clips. Compare the same construction, finished dimensions and supplied scope.

Special-width panels, mixed heights and multiple finishes create additional item groups. For a distributor, a consistent specification makes repeat orders easier to identify. For a contractor, separating regular panels from transitions and gates makes the bill of materials easier to reconcile. Delivery destination, bundle dimensions and unloading constraints also belong in the cost brief.

Agree the inspection and packing points before production

Useful order checks include wire and mesh measurement, overall panel size, edge condition, flatness or bend position, the specified weld checks, coating inspection and a panel-to-post fit check. The drawing and inspection agreement should state the relevant tolerances and acceptance method.

For shipment, group panels by height, width and finish. Identify special bays against the site schedule, protect contact surfaces and list fixing bags against the assembly they serve. If bundles will be opened in installation phases, include that sequence in the packing brief.
